Nov 17 ICANN's BoD Resolution

Does this leave anyone in any doubt where 1Net came about and what its purpose is...

I heard a lot of reports - including on the list - that 1Net was first conceived at the Monte Video meeting, which is obvioiusly not true.

Parminder -

I think most of the folks on this list have thought about better mechanisms for
Internet cooperation, and certainly there were quite a few ideas that were
discussed in Montevideo with a wide variety of perspectives. One could even
argue that much of the IGF improvement discussions are related to a similar
need, so it is definitely a widely-recognized issue.

The fact that ICANN had a position should not be surprising, but you fail to
note a key paragraph that is contained in that resolution -

"To remain accountable to ICANN's mission and community, the Board recognizes that the future of the work of this Coalition and in these initiatives is not ICANN's; while ICANN has important contributions to make to the work of the Coalition, the necessary work now requires all other parties interested in the Internet ecosystem to participate in this work. This Coalition requires multi-stakeholder involvement and support."

At the end of the day, the origin of the "1net" coalition was not because any one
organization thought it was a good idea, but because the leaders of organizations
that met identified the important need for an ongoing effort to address Internet
challenges and felt that collectively a statement to that effect would be helpful.

Regarding 1net's purpose, that now is very much up to its coordinating committee
   and this mailing list.

Thanks,
/John
